5 Live Drive, presented by Peter Allen and Aasmah Mir, won 2 Sony Gold Awards in consecutive years, 2011 and 2012. In May 2012, it won the Sony Gold Award for Best News and Current Affairs programme. This is what the judges said:

“A programme at the top of its game. Truly absorbing radio. Relevant, serious when the occasion demanded it – but equally capable of being light and amusing. Presented by two broadcasters who make it all seem extraordinarily easy.”

In 2011, Drive also won a Sony Gold Award in the Best Breaking News Coverage category for ‘Birth of the Coalition’ programme. When the show went on air at 4pm, Gordon Brown was PM. When it eventually came off air at 9pm, a coalition had been formed between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats and David Cameron was PM. The programme charted the ups and downs, the deals and the compromises, the defeats and the victories of that eventful day in May. You can listen to the programme here.
